The Divine Right of Stagnation

Directed by Marc Blackie & Starring Tessa Kuragi

About.

Photographer/director Marc Blackie has teamed up with iconic model/artist Tessa Kuragi for their third film together, The Divine Right of Stagnation.

Having grown disaffected with her day-to-day existence, Kuragi decides to engineer an emotional catastrophe to shake her out of this malaise. Soon learning that you have to be careful what you wish for, she seeks comfort in distraction when overcome with this imaginary grief. But the world keeps turning, despite her lack of attention, and as her mind is distracted her body is exploited and unwittingly fulfills its function.

The Divine Right of Stagnation, shot with Blackie’s highly stylized black and white aesthetic and reminiscent of the films of Kōji Wakamatsu, is at first a meditation on indifference before plummeting into the realms of a fantasy. A fantasy that sours and results in an indelible conclusion.

Blackie's work has been praised by the New York Magazine for "Jarringly combining eroticism with the uncomfortable and sinister" and is featured on Nick Knight’s ShowStudio. His film “Fucking Doesn’t Help” received it’s premiere at Vienna’s Atelier Theatre and went on to win multiple awards including “Best Experimental Film” at Hong Kong’s Third Culture Film festival.
